In the Tech World: The Key to Retaining and Empowering Talent

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of speaking to a group of technology professionals at the Code & Coffee event in Columbus, Ohio. This bimonthly meeting takes an innovative approach to sharing knowledge and is becoming the premier meet-up for software engineers and tech specialists from all sectors.

Columbus has been increasingly referred to as the "Silicon Valley of the Midwest" due to its growing tech scene and significant investments from major technology companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. Tech jobs are expanding rapidly, with double-digit increases over the last two years. The city of Columbus is committed to growing tens of thousands of STEM jobs through its partnership with The Ohio State University, Jobs Ohio, and private partners through Carmenton, the university's innovation district. It's all part of the bigger growth in the tech industry in  Ohio to include Cleveland and Cincinnati, and other Midwestern cities like Chicago and Minneapolis.

As jobs are growing at accelerated rates, it's essential that new employees receive the onboarding and training they need to be successful. Forty percent of employees leave within the first year due to inadequate training, which can start with ineffective onboarding. In fact, companies with strong onboarding improve new hire retention by 83%! My presentation in Columbus focused on employee retention and professional training. Here's an outline of what was covered:
  • The impact of inadequate training on employee retention
  • Key components of practical onboarding
  • The role of pedagogy in developing training programs
  • Practical training in an application development and engineering context
  • The role and importance of an instructional designer
  • The benefits of working with an instructional designer
  • Key considerations when designing and selecting a training partner

Experiencing the Code & Coffee event, it is evident there is an appetite for professional training within the rapidly growing tech community. As tech jobs attract new candidates, the importance of education and training are vital to their career satisfaction. Focusing on empowering professionals to connect, learn, and grow is helping to shape their advancement hand in hand with professional education.

Convert Webinars into Online Learning: Maximizing Engagement and Accessibility

By Dr. Diana Brandon

For many, webinars can be a first step into online learning. They are relatively simple to create—often just a speaker talking to the camera—and provide a platform for professional development and eLearning. But what happens after the webinar concludes?

However, many organizations now have a catalog of webinars that aren’t effectively meeting current learning needs. Hour-long video recordings lack engagement, often have no assessments to check for understanding, are rarely accessible for those with visual or auditory impairments, and may contain outdated information.

To meet the demand for more flexible and scalable training, converting webinars into online learning offers significant value for both learners and the organization. By transforming time-bound webinars into on-demand, self-paced learning experiences, you provide flexible educational opportunities that better meet employees’ needs—while maximizing the value of your existing recordings.
